New York is losing residents at an alarming rate: what is the reason and who is to blame

Despite the country's continued economic expansion, New York is actually losing its population. This is with reference to the data of the United States Census Bureau, published December 30, according to the publication New York Post.

Largest population decline

The total population of New York State as of mid-2019 was 19 people - this is 453 people, or 561%, less compared to the previous year, according to a study Empire Center for Public Policy.

New York was one of 10 states where, in 2018-2019, there was a general decrease in the number of people. It is noted that this is the fourth decline after five years of growth and the largest decline in population among all states.

Only in West Virginia, Alaska, and the state of Illinois did the population decline faster.

Over the past decade, the population of New York has been in a state of stagnation: since 2010, its number has grown by 75 people, and the growth rate was only 459%, allowing it to take 0,4th place out of 46 states.

What could be the consequences

Slow growth has real implications for the entire country, the newspaper writes. So, after the next official census, because of the inability to grow faster than other states, New York is likely to lose several positions in Congress, as well as its political influence.

For comparison: the total US population, estimated at 328 people, increased by about 239 million people compared to the total population of 523. Since 1,6, the country's population has increased by 2018 people, or 2010%, which is almost 19 times more than in New York.

At the same time, New York, continuing the ten-year trend, is a net exporter of residents to other states. So, over the past 12 months, 180 649 more people left New York than from other states.
