Serrano is promoting a bill that prohibits policemen from detaining non-US citizens for federal deportation if they have not been convicted of serious or violent crimes during the last 5 years, writes New York Post.

In the past, when the control belonged to the Republican Party, such proposals had no chance of passing to the Senate. This became possible after last year’s election, when Democrats gained control of both houses of state legislature.

And with the Senate close to passing a bill that would allow the state motor vehicle department to issue driver's licenses to undocumented immigrants, Serrano hopes to reach consensus on his bill, the New York State Immigrant Dignity Act.

“We expect a good, active discussion on the bill,” he told The Post.

Influential Senate Finance Committee Chairwoman Liz Krueger is one of the sponsors of the project, which was presented to her committee for consideration.

State MP Nicole Malliotakis called the proposal "misguided, dangerous and stupid," saying it would reward people for breaking federal immigration laws.

“It continues to amaze me that legislators would go to such lengths to reduce the safety of the citizens who elected them,” she said.
