Locals and tourists regularly flock to Washington Street to enjoy one of the city's most popular views - the Empire State Building framed by the pillars of the Manhattan Bridge. But a proposed project to build high-rise buildings in the Manhattan area could destroy this species forever, writes Travel and Leisure.

The builders are proposing to build four skyscrapers along the east side of Manhattan, which will block the view of the Empire State Building from the Brooklyn side of the river.

The Municipal Art Society (MAS) is trying to maintain this iconic appearance and block the implementation of the proposed construction project. Those who live in Manhattan also oppose this project, stating that new buildings will lead to an increase in rents in the area, due to which many long-time residents of this part of the city will have to move.

“A person standing on the street who previously could see the Empire State Building will now see part of this construction,” said Tara Kelly, vice president of policy and programs at MAS.

Four skyscrapers, according to the project, will be able to accommodate 6 000 residents. Two towers high in 62 and 69 floors will be located on a common four-story base. The third tower with a height of 1008 feet (307 meters) will consist of 79 floors. The fourth will be the 62 floor.

The county’s historic council argues that preserving historical species is as important as preserving physical buildings or areas.

The New York City Planning Commission must approve the proposed project for the construction of skyscrapers so that construction can begin, although the meeting date for this project has not yet been set.
