Nutella to launch new flavour spread for first time in 60 years

People around the world love Nutella so much that the brand hasn't had to introduce anything new to the public until now. But Nutella's parent company, Ferrero, recently announced plans to launch a new nutty version of its popular spread in the U.S. market. It's a remarkable move for the 61-year-old company.

It's no secret that Americans love peanut butter. In 2022, the U.S. Department of Agriculture found that peanuts accounted for 65 percent of all nut consumption in the country. That's about 3,5 pounds of peanuts per person per year.

Ferrero knows this. That's why it's adding a brand new product to its line: Nutella Peanut, which, according to a press release, "combines the signature creamy texture of Nutella chocolate-hazelnut spread with the delicious taste of roasted peanuts."

(Nutella is officially classified as a spread. However, in common parlance, it is often referred to as a paste due to its thick, creamy texture, similar to other foods such as peanut butter.

Spread (from the English word spread - "to spread") is a food product with a soft, creamy or pasty consistency, intended for spreading on bread, toast, crackers or for use in cooking (for example, in baking). It contains a mixture of fat (butter, margarine), sugar, nuts, milk, cocoa and is easy to spread even at room temperature.

Pasta (from Italian pasta - "dough" or Latin pasta - "mixture") is a thick food product that can be either a stand-alone dish (for example, macaroni) or a creamy mass for spreading or adding to dishes. Everything we love about Nutella is now enhanced with the rich flavor of America's favorite nut. This is the brand's first flavor introduction, and it marks an exciting new era for Nutella.

Nutella Peanut debuted at this year's Sweet and Snacks Expo. According to Allrecipes News Editor Bailey Fink, "It's the perfect combination of peanut butter and hazelnuts." She emphasized that the product is not intended to replace regular peanut butter. The warm cocoa notes keep it from being as chocolatey as, say, Jif's peanut butter-chocolate spread. Bailey especially liked the spread's combination with apples, but she thinks it would be great on crackers, breads, pretzels, and more.

While Ferrero is best known in the U.S. for its Nutella, Tic Tac, and Ferrero Rocher brands, the Nutella Peanut effort is intended to help the candy giant diversify and drive growth in the North American market. If the product is successful, the company has hinted that other peanut-flavored treats could be in the works.

Nutella Peanut is set to hit stores in spring 2026 and will be part of a larger launch of new sweets that Ferrero plans to introduce between now and next year, including Marshmallow Butterfingers, Dr Pepper-flavoured Tic Tacs and limited-edition white chocolate Crunch bars.

While there's still a year to wait for a new Nutella, there's no shortage of new treats to help us pass the time.
