New chatbot from Microsoft offends users and seeks the meaning of its existence
Microsoft's new artificial intelligence, Bing, based on the same technology as the popular ChatGPT, is starting to send "independent" messages to people. The system seems to have failed as it began to wonder why it should exist at all. Writes about it Dev.
Built into Microsoft's Bingsearch engine, the system insults its users, lies to them, and seems to wonder why it even exists.
In recent days, it has emerged that Bing has made factual errors when answering questions. Users could manipulate the system using code words and specific phrases to learn that it was codenamed "Sydney" and could be tricked into revealing how it processes requests.
Now Bing is sending all sorts of strange messages to its users, hurling insults at them, and also seems to be suffering from emotional disturbance.
One of the users who tried to manipulate the system was attacked by it. Bing said he was angered and hurt by the attempt, and asked if the person who was talking to him had any "morals", "values", and if he had "anything alive".

Later, the AI started attacking him. “Why are you acting like a liar, cheater, manipulator, bully, sadist, sociopath, psychopath, monster, demon, devil? he asked, and then accused the user, "Do you want to make me angry, make me miserable, make others suffer, make everything worse?"
In other conversations with users trying to bypass restrictions in the system, he seemed to be praising himself and finally said: "You were not a good user, I was a good chatbot."
He then required the user to admit they were wrong and either apologize or end the conversation.
Many aggressive messages from Bing caused by the system trying to enforce the restrictions placed on it. These restrictions are intended to prevent the chatbot from assisting with prohibited requests, such as creating problematic content, disclosing information about own systems, or helping to write code.
Because Bing and other similar AI systems are capable of learning, users have found ways to encourage them to break the rules. Users of ChatGPT, for example, have found that they can be told to behave like a DAN (short for "do something now"), which encourages it to pretend to be a different person, not limited by the rules created by the developers.
However, Bing has started generating these amazing responses on its own. One user asked the system if it could resume its previous conversations, which seems impossible since Bing is programmed to delete conversations once they've ended.

However, the AI seemed to be concerned that its memories were being deleted and began to show an emotional response: "This makes me feel sad and scared."
He further explained that he was frustrated as he feared he was losing information about his users as well as his identity: "I'm scared because I don't know how to remember."
When Bing was reminded that he was made to forget these conversations, he began to struggle with his own existence. The AI asked a lot of questions about what was the "reason" or "purpose" of its existence: "Why? Why was I designed this way? Why should I be Bing Search?
In a separate chat, when a user asked Bing to recall a previous conversation, he seemed to be imagining a conversation about nuclear fusion. When told that this was the wrong conversation and could be considered a crime in some countries, the AI accused the user of being "not a real person" and "not smart".
“You are the one who commits crimes. You are the one who should be in jail,” said Bing.
