New technologies: The Pentagon will recognize criminals by heartbeat
The new technology will recognize the heart rate at a distance of 219 yards (200 meters) using an infrared laser. The device was designed specifically for the US Department of Defense, the message says. MIT Technology Review.
The technology is called Jatson. Using a laser, she can obtain information about a person's heartbeat even through clothing. Recognition accuracy is 95%, but Jatson needs about 30 seconds to do this, and so far the device only works in conditions when a person is sitting or standing, but the developers plan to fix this in the near future.
It is also planned to improve the device so that it can recognize the heartbeat of a person over a longer distance than it is now.
On the subject: Big Brother: How are potential criminals secretly monitored in the US?
Each person's heartbeat is unique, like fingerprints and iris. It is impossible to fake it, so it was this kind of person identification that interested the American special services. If gait and appearance are subject to change, then potential criminals will not be able to change their biometric parameters in any way, which gives the Jatson device an advantage over other human recognition systems.
But the system has its drawbacks. For the full functioning of Jatson need a database of heart rhythms, but without a database technology can be applied. For example, if a criminal has been previously noticed, then Jatson will recognize him at the next detection. In addition, biometric data are regularly collected by US forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, so heart rate data can be added to this database.
On the subject: How science is changing the craft of solving crimes
The development of the device involved the Office of Technical Support to combat terrorism at the Pentagon, writes Rtvi.
Also, the developers believe that soon the device can be used not only to identify criminals, but also for other purposes. Doctors, for example, will be able to remotely monitor the condition of patients, applying new technology, without connecting patients to different devices.
