Coronavirus does not recede: more than 5 million cases, a record number of infections per day

WHO reports the largest number of cases of coronavirus infection in one day, and the total number of cases in the world has exceeded 5 million, writes NBC News.

More than 24 cases of coronavirus have been reported to the World Health Organization in the past 100 hours, “the highest number in a single day since the outbreak began,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said at a May 000 press conference.

“We still have a long way to go in this pandemic,” he said.

Gebreisus added that almost “two-thirds of these cases were reported in only four countries,” although he did not specify exactly where.

The countries with the most confirmed cases are the United States, Russia, Brazil and the United Kingdom, according to WHO.

“We are very concerned about the rise in cases in low- and middle-income countries,” Ghebreyesus said.

“The pandemic has taught many useful lessons,” he added. — Health is not a price, it is an investment. To live in a safe world, it is necessary to guarantee health for everyone. It's not just the right choice, it's the smart choice."

Ghebreyesus's colleague, Dr Mike Ryan, head of the WHO's emergencies programme, said the "tragic milestone of 5 million cases" would soon be reached. .

He added that people should avoid using hydroxychloroquine, a medication for malaria, unless it has been proven to be a cure. President Donald Trump said that he takes hydroxychloroquine to prevent coronavirus infection.

Gebreisus also admitted that he received a letter from Trump, who threatened to quit WHO and permanently suspend funding for the organization. Trump accused the organization of misconduct in connection with the outbreak and actions in favor of China.

Gebreisus declined to comment on the letter, but said the organization was “studying it.”

WHO has announced a review of the response to the pandemic that arose in China late last year.

“I have said again and again that the WHO calls for accountability more than anyone,” Ghebreyesus said.
