New Silicon Valley: IT pros are leaving California to move to Texas

Austin is the capital of Texas, the second largest state in the United States. But the city acquired a new status during the pandemic. Due to the absence of taxes on income and a relatively affordable housing market, workers in the technical industry began to move here, among them Ukrainians. So a couple of IT specialists from Kharkov came here. Although initially they dreamed of Silicon Valley, it turned out that Austin is a more profitable option, the video says. VOA.

“California was expensive, oversaturated with staff, so we decided it would be easier to find work here. Moreover, this place has a relatively good climate and relatively cheap, ”say Maxim and Yulia, IT specialists who have moved to Austin.

Preparing to move from Los Angeles and graduate of the University of California, Anna Svirshevskaya. Although she was offered a job in Silicon Valley with a higher salary, she chose a software development job in Austin.

“Texas had the smallest salary, but when we calculated taxes, it turned out to be more profitable to move to Texas, even though the salary was $ 25 thousand less. It's not an option to stay in Los Angeles - the taxes are too high, ”she says.

In California, Anna and her husband will have to pay one of the highest income taxes in the country, plus federal deductions. Since there is no income tax in Texas at all, moving to Austin will save the family $ 30 a year.

The soft Texas tax policy and the oversaturation of the labor market in Silicon Valley led to the relocation of such giants as Oracle, Hewlett-Packard, and Elon Musk with the project to build a giant Tesla plant.

But the Ukrainian IT company Soft Serve opened an office in the city 6 years ago, even before the boom.

“Now, when during a pandemic it doesn't matter where to work from, Texas and Austin have become attractive territories, since taxes are lower here, good business conditions and a climate. This can be seen from everything: by the number of license plates from other regions, by the way people talk, by the housing market, which has now jumped by about 50% compared to last year, ”says Valentin Kropov, Soft Serve employee.

Therefore, yes, the Ukrainian outsourcing company found itself in the center of the new US Silicon Valley. Ukrainians who are moving to Austin hope that the city will not rise in price with new trends, since San Francisco has risen in price at one time.
