North Korea officially confirms sending soldiers to war in Ukraine
North Korea (DPRK) on April 28 officially confirmed for the first time that it had sent its troops to fight on Russia's side in the war with Ukraine. The order to do so was given personally by the country's leader Kim Jong-un, the stated goal of the operation is to help Russia regain control over Russian territory occupied by Ukraine, that is, over the Kursk region, writes Reuters.

North Korea sent thousands of troops to Russia, as well as huge quantities of artillery ammunition and missiles, giving Russia an advantage on the battlefield in the western part of the Kursk region.
"The victorious conclusion of the battle for the liberation of Kursk demonstrated the highest strategic level of the strong military friendship between North Korea and Russia," the ruling party of the DPRK explained.
Over the weekend, Russia acknowledged for the first time the deployment of North Korean troops on its territory and said Ukrainian troops had been driven out of the last Russian village they held. Kyiv denied this and said Ukrainian troops were still fighting in parts of Russian territory.
On April 28, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed personal gratitude to North Korea and Kim Jong-un:
"We will always honor the Korean heroes who, along with their Russian brothers in arms, gave their lives for Russia and our common freedom."

The Central Military Commission of North Korea's Workers' Party said their leader made the decision to deploy troops as part of the comprehensive strategic partnership agreement he signed with Putin last year.
North Korea, the party emphasized, “considers it an honor to have an alliance with such a powerful state as the Russian Federation.”
The US State Department demanded an end to the deployment of North Korean troops in Russia and any retaliatory support for Pyongyang from the Russian Federation, since Russia, by training North Korean soldiers, violated UN Security Council resolutions.
South Korea said North Korea's confirmation of sending troops to Russia was an "admission of a criminal act" and condemned North Korea for its "inhumane and immoral" decision to send its young men to war. South Korean officials said North Korea had supplied Russia with weapons, including artillery ammunition and ballistic missiles.
