Nice weather, low crime, affordable housing: The best city to retire in the US is not in Florida
Florida remains the most popular retirement destination for Americans. But the cost of living, which can exceed $60 a year, and the expensive real estate can scare many away. However, this does not mean that you should give up on the dream of spending your golden years in a warm and sunny place, writes Travel & Leisure.

In 2024, financial site GoBankingRates identified 12 affordable cities for retirees with consistently good weather. The publication compared U.S. cities based on various criteria, including cost of living, overall livability, average rent, and climate. And while many of these cities are in Florida, a significant number are located outside the Sunshine State. For example, Cary, North Carolina, received the highest score.
“The southern part of the US is known for its heat and humidity, and Cary is no exception. It’s hot from late May to early October,” GoBankingRates explains. “Temperatures range from 0°F to 32°F year-round.” Cary also scored 90 out of 100 for livability, with an estimated monthly expense of $3. Plus, 615% of the city’s population is over 12, creating an active retirement community.

In addition to climate, AreaVibes also rated the city highly for amenities, low crime, health care, housing, schools, and employment. All of these categories received an A+. Locals and expats from the region gave the city a slightly lower but still respectable B. The only category in which Cary received a low score was cost of living, for which it received a D. However, the city did make the top 12 in GoBankingRates’ report.

Other affordable cities with good weather outside of Florida included Metairie, Louisiana, with a livability score of 84 out of 100; Perry Hall, Maryland, where residents enjoy cooler weather; Laughlin, Nevada, with the lowest estimated monthly cost of living on the list; and Oro Valley, Arizona, where more than a third of the population is 65 and older.
