Ukrainian presidential candidate Vladimir Zelensky took his first steps in show business while still in school. It was there that a team was created, which included friends, and in the future, colleagues from Kvartal 95. Many of them lived in the so-called anthill - a complex of 9-story panels on 27 Party Congress Street. Zelensky’s future wife Elena also lived here. One of the favorite artists of the future politician and showman was then Gennady Khazanov. Zelensky also loved to go to the Krivoy Rog theater, was fond of sports and pushed weights. Now school №95 in Krivoy Rog, where Zelensky studied, is called a gymnasium. True, stationary phones do not work here, as well as at the institute, where the father of the presidential candidate, Alexander Semenovich, teaches. The hooligans stole telephone cables, and for years, schools have not been connected.

27 Party Congress Street, where Zelensky grew up, was recently renamed, now it is named after Vitaly Matusevich. Only the “anthill” itself has not changed.

The main event that all the neighbors are discussing - will Zelensky become president?

“I don’t know any of my neighbors who wouldn’t vote for Volodya in the second round. Although there were options in the first round. We had a candidate here like Alexander Vilkul. But now everyone is for Zelensky,” said Vladimir’s classmate and school friend Andrei Zaslavsky.

Andrei and Vladimir haven’t seen each other for a long time; a classmate doesn’t even have a former comrade’s phone. But this does not change matters, the man is closely watching all the events around Ze.

“I would say about Volodya that he is a rare workaholic. It was thanks to this quality that he achieved success in KVN. He created the team while still at school. He invited me to rehearsals, I watched everything that happened on stage. Sometimes everything dragged on until 12 at night. I’m already saying: “That’s it, Volodya, I’m off to bed. You're going to?". And he answers: “No, we will continue to rehearse until the number is perfect.” And they were practicing every gesture, every word, every emotion until one in the morning. And in the morning Volodya calmly came to class. And he studied well, I was surprised at him,” recalls Zaslavsky.

But Zelensky was not only interested in KVN. A classmate says that at that time the presidential candidate also performed in “What? Where? When?".

“We even had such a rivalry - Volodya tried to drag me into KVN, and I tried to drag him into “What? Where? When?". I then created a team and dreamed that we would have our own Krivoy Rog team. Volodya took part in it. And you know, he was a good expert, even the best,” says a former classmate.

Andrei Zaslavsky recalls that Zelensky was one of those with whom one could speak not only on school topics, but also go to the theater.

“Try to drag an ordinary schoolchild into the theater. Volodya and I went to our Krivoy Rog theater, watched performances, watched the actors play. You could talk to him about various philosophical topics; he thought deeply. Then his favorite actor was Gennady Khazanov, Volodya even looked somewhat like him, he inherited his intonations and techniques. We often discussed Khazanov’s performances and analyzed his game,” the man said.

Manzhosov loved to dance

“I saw Pikalov, but we didn’t know each other closely. But Denis studied with us. Then he danced very well, we even thought that he would devote his life to dancing,” noted Zaslavsky.

“Our class was an in-depth study of the English language. Our first class teacher was Zhanna Iosifovna Kilshtein. She taught English and forced everyone to talk to each other, even during recess, only in this language. Then she went to Israel, and the class was led by Galina Gennadievna. We also communicated with her only in English. Every year at school we took an exam in a foreign language, so our preparation was very high. And the school itself was Russian-language, like all schools in the early 90s,” continues Zelensky’s former classmate.

"Their feelings were serious and deep"

The showman's future wife Lena also studied at school 95, but in a parallel class. And she lived in the same “anthill”.

“He and Lena started dating at school. And from the very beginning their feelings were serious and deep. I actually envy them in a good way. Lena lived in the building next door to me. And every evening Volodya stood downstairs and waited for her. Lena went out with her dog named Katya and they went for a walk around the house, in the parks. And when they finished school, he also came and waited for her near the entrance, where Volodya could always be met,” says Zaslavsky.

As for the house of Zelensky, both Andrei and many others recall that Volodya’s friends and classmates constantly hung out in their four-room apartment.

“Dad usually greeted us and retired to his room. And mom always tried to treat us to something tasty. They had a barbell in their apartment. Volodya’s father used to lift weights, and then Volodya became interested in it. He showed it to me, I even tried to lift it, I don’t remember what the weight was,” the man explained.

“He’s not a drug addict!”

Andrei Zaslavsky on his page on the social network set a banner in support of his schoolmate. And he says that this is the first election in his life, where he knows from the first day exactly who he will vote for.

“I think that Volodya will be a president who only wants the best for Ukraine. He is a wealthy and successful person, he doesn’t need anything personally, he’s just worried about Ukraine. Unfortunately, now there are many provocations against him, he is called a drug addict. But listen, Volodya plays sports, and he showed off his muscles at his performances. Drug addicts don’t look like that, it’s clear without any tests!” - Andrey is sure.

The classmate also hopes that in some ways Zelensky will be similar to his character from “Servant of the People” Goloborodko. He watches this series carefully.

“Remember, in the movie he tells the IMF to go to hell. Once in an interview he was asked: would he do this in real life? To which Volodya replied that no, he was not going to use such language. And besides, he believes that it is always necessary to negotiate and seek compromises. Although we want him to be more like his character,” says Zaslavsky.

Another former classmate is very sorry that people who call themselves nationalists do not want to vote for Zelensky. Because it is important for them that the future president is not fluent in Ukrainian.

“I agree that by learning a language, we will not live better. Volodya comes from a Russian-speaking city. Where previously they mostly voted for the Party of Regions, for the communists, and in the first round they supported Vilkul. True, now among my neighbors there is not a single person who would not vote for Zelensky. I think we shouldn’t rush to impose the Ukrainian language like that, to completely translate everything. One or two generations will pass, and people themselves will speak Ukrainian,” says a classmate.

Former comrade Zelensky dreams that this time more than 90% would vote for Ze.

“I really want this. In the West, many votes were also given for him. He poses a serious threat only to power. And not only for Poroshenko, but for the entire government. Our presidents and prime ministers change, but the essence remains the same. But Volodya wants to change everything,” Andrei Zaslavsky is sure.
