No online: how the 2021 Oscars will be held

Oscar producers Steven Soderbergh, Stacey Sher and Jesse Collins sent out letters to all candidates detailing what the ceremony would look like in the face of restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and also clarified a few rules for nominees. Writes about it Deadline.

First of all, the 93rd annual Academy Awards will not take place online, unlike the vast majority of other pandemic-affected ceremonies that have taken place recently (with the exception of the Grammy Awards). That is, either the nominee appears in person, or the Academy will accept the Oscar on his behalf.

“For those who are unable to attend due to scheduling, we want you to know that there will be no zoom option for the show,” producers say. “We are going to great lengths to provide a safe and enjoyable evening for all of you in person, as well as for all the millions of film fans around the world, and we feel that going virtual will undermine those efforts.”

Among other things, the organizers ask candidates to allow themselves to be interviewed and tell their personal story about what led each of them to this important moment in their lives. And it's not so much about high-profile nominees, but about the actors. This is an attempt to combine the idea that films tell stories, and somehow they are all storytellers themselves, and their own journey can be told at the Oscars.

The organizers also offer advice on the dress code. They say casual formal looks are fine, but please don't move on to casual wear, meaning no sweatshirts.

Regarding security protocols due to COVID-19, the organizers of the ceremony said that Union Station will be treated the same way as film sets are treated today. Here's what they write about the matter: “On the practical side of the show, we're planning to host an intimate in-person event at Union Station in Los Angeles with additional elements of a live show from Dolby Theater in Hollywood. We see this event as an active filming location. "

Organizers previously confirmed that both Union Station and the Dolby Theater would be used for the ceremony. Dolby is for what producers call "show extras" (probably referring to the performances of the Best Song nominees).

The Academy will hold a 90-minute pre-performance gathering in the courtyard of Union Station for the nominees and their guests. This year, only nominees, their guests and Oscar winners are allowed to attend the event in person.

ABC will air the 93rd Academy Awards live on Sunday, April 25 at 17:00 pm New York time.
