'It's scary to be here': 20 Ukrainians are quarantined in a hostel in China

20 Ukrainians who worked in an amusement park in Wuhan are waiting for evacuation. They were locked in a dormitory, reports Air force.

Ukrainian Alexandra Volkova, who lives in Wuhan, is indignant, saying that why preparations for the evacuation began so late.

20 Ukrainians lived and worked under contract in a large amusement park Happy Valley (Happy Valley) in Wuhan.

“We came to Wuhan from Krivoy Rog to work as dancers. We have our own program and costumes. We took part in parades and shows,” one of the dancers, Victoria Rudko, tells BBC News Ukraine.

The contract was already ending when Wuhan became the epicenter of a coronavirus outbreak. The city introduced quarantine. On January 23, the amusement park was closed, and then they themselves were isolated in the hostel.

“At first we were told to just stay in the hostel. Then the hostel was closed altogether. Sometimes they let you go out to buy groceries, but the shops around are also closed. We don’t have enough food, we are fed poorly once a day,” the girl said.

Upon returning from the store, they measure the temperature at the entrance.

According to her, the military walks around the city, check that no one goes out on the street, they are fined if they see them without a mask.

“There are practically no people on the street now. Everyone avoids each other,” Victoria emphasized.

Victoria says that Ukrainians have long gathered their things and are waiting for the evacuation. On the eve of the Ukrainian authorities said that Ukrainians from Wuhan will be taken away on February 11. However, on February 11 they reported that there would be no evacuation.

In Kiev, they said that they would not take away fellow citizens until they prepared everything in Ukraine to quarantine them. Also, an official of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine said that there will be no evacuation until these people sign a consent to quarantine.

However, Victoria says that all Ukrainians from her hostel have long signed such a statement. They are constantly in touch with the embassy, ​​but they don’t know when they will be evacuated.

“We want to appeal to the minister and say that everyone who wants to return home has given consent and filled out all the forms to undergo a 14-day quarantine in Ukraine,” Vyacheslav Demkov, who is also awaiting evacuation in the same hostel in Ukraine, told BBC News Ukraine Wuhan.

“Every time they tell us something different: either there is no money, then there is no place in Ukraine, or the plane is delayed,” another Ukrainian, Anastasia Kolomiets, is indignant.

“Until now there was no panic; we believed that they would take us away. But this morning, when we were supposed to be picked up, and then everything was cancelled, that was the end. All citizens of other countries were evacuated. I have a friend from Australia - they were taken away. Everyone was evacuated a long time ago, but they can’t do it for us? It’s as if they forgot about us,” Victoria is annoyed.

“People write on the Internet that we should not be evacuated, because we will be some kind of threat to Ukraine. But while we are healthy, we need to evacuate, because we don’t know what will happen tomorrow. The situation in Wuhan is getting worse and worse. It’s just scary to be here,” she concluded.

“We are giving up”

Ukrainian Alexandra Volkova, who also lives in Wuhan, told the BBC News Ukraine a similar story: she has been waiting for the evacuation for several weeks, but everyone is postponing it.

The girl worked for three months in Wuhan as a model, and by the end of February she was supposed to fly home. However, the city became the epicenter of the coronavirus and found itself in tight isolation.

“We were supposed to be taken out today, but everything was cancelled. I just give up. For technical reasons, Ukraine has not been able to rescue its fellow citizens for three weeks now,” Volkova stated.

According to her, the embassy has already prepared transport to transport people to the airport, sent material assistance for essential goods. People signed a statement that they agreed to a two-week quarantine, but the evacuation was again postponed.

She says that the situation is getting worse every day, the number of patients is increasing and there are more and more risks of getting sick.

“Our government is still saying 'wait'. It probably doesn't understand that the longer we stay here, the worse it will be. There will be no one left to save. There are already several patients in my area, although before this it was relatively calm here,” Volkova is concerned.

The evacuation of Ukrainians from the Chinese province of Hubei due to the coronavirus outbreak will begin on February 18, said the Minister of Health of Ukraine Zoryana Skaletskaya, according to “New time«.

According to her, the plane for the Ukrainians, who are now in China covered by the deadly coronavirus, will fly on Tuesday, February 18. He will return back the next day, February 19.

The Minister emphasized that only healthy Ukrainians would be taken aboard.

“Only citizens who have no symptoms, that is, healthy people who are checked by the Chinese authorities, will come to Ukraine. First, he will check the Chinese authorities and only then will he let them out. Then, the Ukrainian team of doctors on board will also check them. She will accompany them not only on board, but will then remain in isolation with them, ”said Skaletskaya.

After arriving in Ukraine, all passengers will immediately be put on a bus and taken to a designated isolation place where Ukrainians arriving from China will be kept in quarantine for at least 14 days. Where exactly this place will be is not yet known. So far, four options are being considered, various details and conditions are being agreed upon.

Skaletskaya also said that if any of the passengers already had signs of illness on the plane, they would immediately take him to the hospital.

“There is no delay. There is a systematic, measured, reasonable decision-making process in order to ensure the arrival of Ukrainian citizens in Ukraine. But at the same time, it is necessary to give everyone the opportunity to feel safe from a possible drift, from the possible spread of the disease, which is now in China, ”the minister explained.

Meanwhile, over the past 2,4 hours in China, 1016 thousand people have been infected with coronavirus, and XNUMX people have died from the outbreak since the beginning of the outbreak.
