San Francisco declares state of emergency due to coronavirus

The city of San Francisco declared a state of emergency in connection with the outbreak of the Chinese coronavirus after US health officials warned that its spread in the United States was inevitable, writes Independent.

On Tuesday, February 25, the mayor of San Francisco, London Breed, declared a state of emergency in a statement saying that the "world picture" around the Wuhan coronavirus is "changing rapidly" and city officials "must increase preparedness."

“We see the virus spreading to new parts of the world every day,” she continued, “and we are taking the necessary steps to protect San Franciscans from harm.”

There have not yet been any cases of coronavirus reported in San Francisco. But there have been more than 80 confirmed cases worldwide - most of them in China - and more than 200 deaths.

The mayor's announcement came as officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggested that the spread of the virus in the United States was not a matter of "if" but "when."

Nancy Messonier, director of the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said: “As more and more countries experience the spread of the virus, successfully containing it at our borders becomes more and more difficult.”

She added: “The question is not whether this will happen, but when it will happen and how many people in this country will have serious illnesses.”

The official also warned that “everyday life could be seriously destroyed,” as the coronavirus continues to spread.
