New study: risk group and all methods of transmission of Chinese coronavirus

Chinese health authorities unveiled the first study of coronavirus Covid-19, based on an analysis of more than 70 cases of the disease, writes Air force.

According to the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, in more than 80% of cases, the disease proceeded without complications, and the greatest risk of exacerbations concerned the elderly and those who have chronic diseases.

The study also notes that healthcare providers are also at risk.

On the eve of the publication of the report, it became known about the death of the director of the largest hospital in Wuhan, who was at the epicenter of the disease. 51-year-old Li Jiming was one of the prominent representatives of the Chinese health care system.

Hubei Province, where Wuhan City is located, has been hit hardest by the spread of the virus.

According to the report, the mortality rate there is 2,9% compared to only 0,4% in other provinces.

Overall, the mortality rate from Covid-19 is 2,3%.

At the time of the report’s publication, 1 people had died from coronavirus and 868 had become infected.

According to Chinese authorities, more than 12 people recovered.

What the researchers found

The report, published in the Chinese journal of epidemiology, summarizes the analysis of 72 cases of Covid-314 coronavirus. The study addresses confirmed diagnoses, suspected illness, and asymptomatic cases.

The report confirms general information about the symptoms of the disease and its distribution.

Moreover, in 80,9% of cases there was a moderate course of the disease, in 13,8% - severe, and only 4,7% of cases were critical.

The highest mortality rate among confirmed patients is in people over 80 years of age.

Among those who died, more men (2,8%) than women (1,7%).

The study also confirmed that the more severe course of the disease and the risk of death among those who have chronic respiratory diseases, diabetes, hypertension.

The report notes the risk to health care workers. As of February 11, 2020, 3 doctors were infected, 019 were confirmed to have the disease, and five medical workers died.

On February 13, Chinese authorities expanded diagnostics to include “clinically diagnosed cases” in the total number of patients, which had previously been separated from “confirmed cases.” This has led to a sharp increase in virus spread statistics.

What to expect

The report also states that the epidemic peak of symptoms occurred on January 23-26 and decreased until February 11.

According to the authors of the study, the isolation of entire cities and the systematic dissemination of critical information on measures through various channels played an important role. In particular, recommendations for handwashing, wearing masks, seeking help, and mobilizing quick-response teams helped stop the spread of the epidemic.

At the same time, experts warn that “the country must be prepared for a possible resurgence of the epidemic.”

In early February, Wuhan, the epicenter of the spread of the virus and the largest city in Hubei Province, was completely closed. China has also imposed severe restrictions on the movement of people and goods.

Meanwhile, two more Russians on the Diamond Princess cruise ship in the port of Yokohama were diagnosed with coronavirus infection. It is reported "Voice of America" with reference to the Russian Embassy in Japan. In the near future they will be delivered to the hospital. Earlier it became known about one case of infection of a Russian citizen on board a ship.

Ill Russians feel normal. The disease occurs in them without pronounced symptoms, the Russian embassy said on Facebook.

As of February 20, four more Russians left the ship, which was quarantined due to the coronavirus. In total, there were 24 citizens of Russia on the ship.

Today, it became known about the death of two Japanese citizens hospitalized with Diamond Princess about a week ago from a coronavirus infection. Patients were over 80 years old, Japanese authorities said.
