Israel recognized the fact of rewriting history to please Putin

The Israeli Holocaust Remembrance Museum in Yad Vashem in Jerusalem apologized for the fact that the materials presented at the World Forum on the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi death camp Auschwitz distorted historical facts about the role of the USSR in World War II. This recognition is contained in a letter to Yad Vashem, writes "Present Tense".

The forum was held on the territory of Yad Vashem in Israel on January 23, on the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi death camp Auschwitz in Poland. It was attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin, US Vice President Mike Pence, French President Emmanuel Macron and other high-ranking politicians. During their performances, the museum screened video presentations about the Holocaust and World War II.

Moreover, these materials did not mention the crimes of the Soviet Union during the Second World War, nor the responsibility of the USSR authorities for its beginning. Nothing was said about the partition of Poland between the USSR and Germany in 1939 as a result of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, and on the maps presented the borders of Poland and its neighbors were incorrectly indicated and did not contain any references to Ukraine, which is in conflict with the current Russian authorities, listed in the letter Yad Vashem.

The information presented at the event, which was attended by dozens of world leaders, contained “inaccuracies” and “partial presentation of facts” that “created an unbalanced impression,” the museum acknowledged. In the letter, Yad Vashem actually admits that it allowed the distortion of historical facts to serve Putin’s political and diplomatic interests.

As follows from the letter, the organization of the forum was carried out by Moshe Canton, president of the European Jewish Congress. He has close ties with Putin, and Forbes magazine estimated Canton’s fortune in 2018 at $ 3,7 billion, placing him in 29th place in the ranking of Russia's richest businessmen.

Shortly before the forum, Putin stated several times that the USSR was not to blame for unleashing the Second World War, accused Poland of collaborating with Germany during the partition of Czechoslovakia, and in fact justified Soviet invasion of Poland in September 1939. Also he claimedthat the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact was a great success for Soviet diplomacy. These statements by Putin provoked a sharp reaction from Poland and controversy in Russian society.
