'Get together, otherwise we'll breathe': Ukrainians hold protests against the admission of evacuees from China

Ukraine is preparing to take out its citizens from Chinese Wuhan, where the coronavirus epidemic has been announced. But where they will be delivered is not yet clear. Residents of Ukrainian cities hold protests against the placement of evacuees. In some cases, demonstrators set up roadblocks and bring tires, writes Air force.

According to the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, Alexei Danilov, the Ukrainian plane has already landed in Wuhan. He must pick up 48 citizens of Ukraine and 29 foreigners.

“Those who are at the epicenter of the outbreak will be able to fly out of China. There is an experienced medical team on board. I am sure that the flight will be comfortable and calm. We look forward to being on our native land!” Danilov wrote on Facebook.

However, people who marched in demonstrations in Lviv and Ternopol regions say that local hospitals are not ready to receive evacuated people: the rooms do not have ventilation, and doctors are not protected from infection.

On Wednesday, a protest rally was held in the city of Vinniki in the Lviv region. Local residents fear that compatriots who arrived from China may be placed in a military hospital located there.

“Get together, otherwise we’ll die!”

The reason for the demonstration in Vinniki was the teachings that took place on that day in this medical institution. Local authorities claim that this was a test of readiness for hospitalization of patients with acute respiratory viral diseases, but many local residents do not believe them.

During the exercise, patients were removed from the hospital and personnel were evacuated. A video about this was posted on Facebook by the Vinniki City Council.

Information began to spread in social networks that in this way the medical institution was being prepared for the deployment of Ukrainians evacuated from China, calls were made in local groups to protest.

“People, come together, otherwise we’ll die!” wrote user Yarina Borodyuk in a local Facebook group.

About a hundred people gathered at the rally near the hospital; tires were brought to the hospital building - one of the symbols of the demonstrations on Maidan Nezalezhnosti in 2013-14.

The meeting was addressed by Mayor Vinnikov Vladimir Kvurt and representatives of the regional administration. They assured that Ukrainians from China would not be brought here. But the demonstrators did not believe this.

“If these Ukrainians are brought here, and if one of them turns out to be sick, then the medical staff who work in this hospital... they all live in the city. They go to stores, their children go to kindergartens, to schools,” one of the protest participants in Vinniki told a local television company. — Have you seen how in China they treat everything against this infection? There are doctors in spacesuits! Will our nurse come wearing this mask? Where do we have anything isolated here? Have you seen these holes? Let them make some isolated blocks. We have a common sewer system here.”

The Lviv regional administration calls the situation around the hospital “information fever,” calls on local residents to calm down and notes that it has no information that Ukrainians from China will be housed in Vinniki.

Deputy Head of the Lviv Regional Administration Ivan Sobko said that Lviv Airport is considered as one of the places where an airplane from China can land, but a decision has not yet been made. He also said that he had not received instructions on the placement of evacuated in Lviv or in the region.

Ternopil says no

Among the places where Ukrainians from China can be received, the Medobory sanatorium in the Ternopil region was also named.

There were also protests. On February 18, about 300 people marched in the village of Mikulintsy, adjacent to the sanatorium. There, local residents even erected roadblocks at the entrance to the village to prevent the entry of people from China.

The mayor of Ternopol and deputies of the regional council opposed the placement of evacuated people in the Ternopol region. According to the mayor, there are no conditions for treating patients with coronavirus in the region: there is no regional infectious diseases hospital, the region has not been allocated money to buy personal protective equipment for doctors.

On Wednesday, deputies of the Ternopil Regional Council turned to the President of Ukraine and the Prime Minister with a statement that hospitals in the region were not ready to receive Ukrainians from China. They also asked not to disperse roadblocks in Mikulintsy.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine reported that the premises where the evacuees will be placed will be protected by a double protection ring. They promise to send 47 employees every day: 30 police officers and 17 military men.

Ukrainian refused to evacuate because of his beloved dog

Ukrainian Anastasia Zinchenko stayed in China with her beloved doggie. The girl faced a difficult choice: to save herself, to finally get home and leave her furry friend in China, or to remain at the epicenter of the epidemic in Wuhan with him, says "Today".

She was left almost without food, but, fortunately, not alone. The girl failed to leave for Ukraine with 48 citizens of our state. And all because of her pet - Michelle's doggie.

For several days, the Ukrainian woman, putting herself in danger, was able to collect all the certificates necessary for the export of the dog. I got everything for a flight with a four-legged one. But the efforts were in vain. The girl was informed that Michel would not be taken aboard, and this is the categorical position of the Chinese side. The girl cried in despair all day. Not a single official document on the ban on the export of Michel was provided to her.

The Segodnya team sent a request to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to explain why the Ukrainian citizen should remain in Wuhan. The Ministry responded:

“Although A. Zinchenko and other citizens received the necessary permission from the Chinese side to evacuate, the Chinese authorities refused to evacuate her dog, which was immediately reported. Despite recommendations to temporarily leave Wuhan, A. Zinchenko decided to stay in the city.”

While Anastasia struggled with the system, her mother supported her. She is now in the Polish city of Wroclaw. The woman says: she has no idea what is going to happen for Nastya to leave the dog and go.

“Why should my child face such a choice? Very difficult! I want to see my daughter! We raised her in such a way that an animal is our family member, they cannot be abandoned,” says Oksana Matsievskaya.

Starting today, in the residential complex where the Ukrainian remained, the new exit-entry rules have begun to apply, these are new restrictions. If the tenant needs something from the outside, he must inform the elder about it, who will forward the request to the authorized bodies for consideration. But, despite the bans of exit, the girl managed to get permission to exit - in the police. In the nearest store, besides cookies and noodles, there was nothing to buy. This food should be enough for Nastya for three days, and what to do next, she does not know yet. Next to the girl is her beloved dog Michelle, and only together, already at the end of quarantine, they will go home.
