Snowfalls, icy rains and severe thunderstorms: the USA has covered a powerful winter storm

Despite the fact that in early February, most of the country can enjoy mild winters, serious weather changes are expected in some regions of the United States, writes Fox News.

According to the National Weather Service, the winter storm will move from the Rocky Mountains to the East Coast, starting on Monday, February 3, and reaching the east of the country within a week.

"Dangerous weather conditions include: heavy snow over the western mountains, strong winds in the southwest, severe thunderstorms in the south, ice and heavy snow from the southern plains to the northeast," the service said.

The NWS Weather Prediction Center said "widespread" snowfall is forecast for parts of Idaho, Wyoming, Utah and Colorado, with winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories in effect.

“The heaviest snow is expected to fall in the higher elevations of central Wyoming and north central Colorado, with up to a foot of accumulation possible,” forecasters said.

Many schools in the Salt Lake City area were closed on February 3 after reports of suspected snowy weather and morning travel restrictions were reported.

On Sunday, February 2, the temperature reached 71 degrees Fahrenheit (21,6 Celsius) in Denver, but the NWS office in Boulder warned that “drastic changes” were coming.

It was expected that drizzling rain and snow would pass through the plains by the end of the morning and be replaced by snowfall, which would turn into a heavy snowstorm by Tuesday morning, February 4, in the direction of Fort Collins south to Colorado Springs. By the time of the storm in Denver, 6 to 8 inches (about 15-20 centimeters) of snow may fall.

Meteorologists expect snowfalls to be maximum in the evening on Monday, February 3, and in the morning on Tuesday, February 4. The Colorado Department of Transportation said the biggest risks would be a blizzard and poor visibility in the mountains.

“Motorists are encouraged to consider leaving work early Monday afternoon or working from home to avoid traveling on snowy and icy roads,” the department said in a statement.

Representatives of the Colorado Transportation Department said on February 3 “round-the-clock snow shifts” were installed for the rescue crews, and roads may be closed for the safety of motorists.

“All available resources will be used,” the department said. “As snowfall intensifies, crews will be concentrating on major roads and reducing service levels on secondary roads in an effort to reduce the impact of the weather on major highways.”

It is predicted that the storm will move to the Southern Plains before Tuesday night, February 4, affecting western Nebraska, Oklahoma, and western Texas.

Also, meteorologists predict that the storm system will move east, but will not affect the weather in Iowa, where today officially started presidential elections.

According to forecasts by Fox News senior meteorologist Janice Dean, rain is not forecasted in Iowa on Monday, mostly a clear sky with seasonal highs.

“They have mostly sunny skies in the forecast,” Dean said. “A storm will pass to the west of us, but it will not affect anything.”

Dean added that “there is no reason not to leave” today because the weather in Iowa will be “impressive”.
