Weakening quarantine: which states are removing restrictions now

Another group of US states is preparing to ease restrictions on coronavirus this week, despite warnings from many health experts. Writes about it "Voice of America".

Experts believe that the growth of contacts between people can cause a new wave of COVID-19 - a respiratory disease caused by an extremely contagious virus, from which over 54300 Americans have already died.

Colorado, Mississippi, Minnesota, Montana and Tennessee will join other states that have begun an experiment to restart the economy in the absence of infrastructure for testing and tracking contacts, which, according to experts, is necessary to prevent a new outbreak of infection.

Georgia, Oklahoma, Alaska and South Carolina have already taken steps to restart the economy after monthly quarantines imposed by order of the authorities.

Against the backdrop of disparate protests against restrictions on leaving the house, which took place across the country, the number of detected cases in the United States as of Monday, April 27, almost reached 1 million.

New York and other states extended restrictions until mid-May. New York reported 367 new deaths, the lowest since March 30. Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo said construction sites and manufacturing plants will be the first to resume work while taking precautions and if incidence continues to decline.

Other states, mainly with Republican governors, take a more aggressive approach.

Tennessee authorities announced the resumption of restaurants since April 27. Mississippi quarantine ends on the same day.

Montana, reporting three new cases on April 26, will allow businesses to resume work on Monday, April 27, if they limit capacity and comply with social distance standards.

In the meantime, Minnesota will allow some companies to resume work from April 27th. This will allow 80-100 thousand people employed in industry, production or in office positions to return to work.

In Colorado, Democratic Governor Jared Polis gave the green light to retail delivery, which begins Monday, April 27th. Hair salons and tattoo parlors will open on Friday, May 1, followed by retail stores, restaurants and movie theaters.

Royal Rose opens her tattoo studio in Greenley (Colorado) after a month-long break, not because she wants it, but because of the need to pay the accumulating bills.

“I would stay home if the government encouraged this, but they didn’t, they say that it’s best to get back to work, although it can be risky,” said 39-year-old Rose.

But easing restrictions in most states will not be uniform. For example, Denver extended quarantine until May 8, but city residents can go to the hairdresser in a neighboring county.

Georgia has banned municipalities from stricter restrictions than state laws.

Eight states did not impose exit restrictions: Arkansas, Iowa, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming.

Several surveys have shown that Americans, both Republicans and Democrats, would mostly like to stay home to protect themselves from the coronavirus, despite the negative economic consequences.
