Governor Gavin Newsome announced that some retailers will be allowed to resume work in California on Friday, May 8, amid encouraging coronavirus testing statistics.

“We enter the next phase this week,” Newsom said at a press briefing on Monday, May 4. “This is a very positive sign, and it happened for only one reason: the data says it can happen.”

According to the governor, such enterprises will include bookstores, clothing, toys and sporting goods stores, as well as music stores and florists.

This phase will not include shopping malls, offices or restaurant tables.

Those businesses that may resume work on May 8 will have to comply with restrictions, such as physical distance and delivery restrictions. According to Newsom, May 7 will be published detailed instructions on the second phase of the opening of state enterprises.

Newsome announced that the second phase would provide local officials with greater flexibility to open businesses further. But these regional plans must be certified and meet “criteria that include the ability to test people and track data, the ability to physically distance themselves and sanitation, and the ability to protect the most vulnerable residents in the community,” including older people, homeless people and prisoners.

Newsom also announced a partnership with the University of California, San Francisco and Los Angeles to better track contacts. According to Newsom, the goal is to strengthen the state’s public health systems with 3000 new tracking tools per week.
