Study: Chinese coronavirus was more active than thought

Federal studies by scientists from several large institutions have shown that a new form of coronavirus that caused a pandemic can survive in the air for several hours, reports The Hill.

A study awaiting peer review by scientists from Princeton University, the University of California at Los Angeles and the National Institute of Health (NIH), published on Wednesday, March 11, showed that the 2019-nCoV virus can remain viable in the air for up to 3 hours after spraying. On plastic and other surfaces, it can remain viable for up to three days.

“Our results show that 2019-nCoV aerosol transmission is likely because the virus can remain viable outdoors for several hours and on the surface for up to a day,” the study said.

Research results show that people can become infected with the disease simply through air or a solid object, even if direct contact with an infected person does not occur. This discovery, if confirmed, contrasts sharply with previous media reports, which suggested that the virus could not be transmitted without direct human contact.

Confirmed diagnoses of coronavirus infection were received by 121 people worldwide, while more than 000 people died. Most of the deaths occurred in mainland China, where the virus is believed to have originated, and in Italy, where its own large-scale outbreak is observed.
