'Cocktail' of drugs: doctors have found an effective way to treat Chinese coronavirus

Thai doctors claim to have achieved significant results in the fight against the new coronavirus by mixing conventional antiviral drugs with HIV medications. Writes about it with the BBC.

According to doctors, after taking such a cocktail, an improvement in the condition even in severe patients occurs within 48 hours.

This method was tested in one of the hospitals in Bangkok, where several patients went straight for correction, including a 70-year-old Chinese woman from Wuhan, whose analyzes ten days in a row showed the presence of the virus in the body and whose condition was rather serious.

One of the patients, however, showed an allergic reaction, but, according to doctors, it is insignificant, and in general his condition also improves.

The formula includes drugs for HIV therapy such as lopinavir and ritonavir in combination with a large dose of antiviral oseltamivir.

The idea of ​​using parts of these components to treat coronavirus is not new. The Ministry of Health of Russia also suggested resorting to lopinavir and ritonavir, but in combination with two other drugs.

However, the specialists of the Russian analytical company RNC Pharma were doubtful about the proposal, saying that each of the proposed components has many side effects.

Thai doctors, for their part, took as a basis a more predictable drug - oseltamivir.

“We followed internationally accepted practices, but our doctors simply increased the dose of one of the drugs,” explains Somsak Akxlim, director general of the Thai Department of Medical Services.

According to doctors from Thailand, their Chinese colleagues have already adopted a new treatment method.

“The prognosis is good, but comprehensive studies are needed to definitely consider this an anti-coronavirus treatment,” says Bangkok Hospital pulmonologist Kriangska Atipornwanich.

In Thailand, 19 cases of coronavirus infection have been reported. Eight patients recovered completely and were discharged from the hospital, 11 remain under medical supervision.

According to Somsak Accslim, the Ministry of Health of the country will hold a meeting on Monday to discuss the successful treatment of a 70-year-old patient, but it is too early to say that the new method of treatment is applicable to all cases.

“For now, we will only treat the most severe patients this way,” Axlim said.
