The organizers of the competition emphasized that in recent weeks they had been considering various options for changing the format so that the competition would nevertheless take place, but as a result of growing uncertainty due to the closure of the borders, they decided to completely cancel it.

The competition was to be held in the Netherlands from May 12 to 16.

The official cancellation of the competition was also reported to the correspondent TASS EMU spokesman David Goodman.

“Yes, we can confirm that,” he said.

A press release posted on the organization's website expressed deep regret over the cancellation of Eurovision 2020. It is emphasized that this decision “was difficult.” It is motivated by the uncertainty surrounding the spread of the COVID-19 disease.

“The Eurovision Song Contest 2020, which was scheduled to take place at the Ahoy concert hall in Rotterdam on May 12,14, 16 and XNUMX, has been cancelled,” the press release said. “Taking into account the measures taken by the Dutch and other authorities, the European Broadcasting Union has decided that the event cannot go ahead.”

It is noted that the competition can be held in Rotterdam in 2021.

“It appears that Rotterdam is and will remain the city that should host the next Eurovision,” the event’s Dutch organizers said in a statement. “We are proud that Rotterdam is ready to take on this role in 2021.” In the coming period, we will discuss together [with the city authorities and the European Broadcasting Union] how this can be implemented.”
