The number of illegal immigrants detained at the US border is reduced for the eighth consecutive month

Border arrests fell for the eighth month in a row following a Trump administration crackdown that included forcing asylum seekers back to Mexico to await decisions on their claims, Department of Homeland Security officials reported Feb. 3. Time.

News of conditions at border stations and migrant deaths sparked widespread outrage and prompted Congress to push for additional funding.

More than 55 asylum seekers, including families and pregnant women, were sent across the border to Mexico to wait for decisions on their asylum cases, and faced illnesses and terrible conditions in temporary camps, as well as attacks and abductions by cartels that patrol border areas.

Mexico has also stepped up its border efforts, making it clear that caravans that once traveled through its territory will no longer be allowed to do so, after intense pressure and the threat of Washington's trade tariffs in 2019. US policy currently prohibits anyone from seeking asylum if that person first crossed over to another country. Officials also send asylum seekers to Central America through border security agreements with Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.

Despite panic at the border, asylum seekers still sign up for a waiting list to enter the US at the official crossing in San Luis, Arizona. The US Customs and Border Control Service informs the Mexican shelter that manages the list of how many asylum applications will process each day. The shelter estimates waiting at 3-4 months.
