16 dead and at least 30 wounded: second bloody weekend in a row in Chicago

On Monday, June 1, authorities in Chicago (Illinois) announced that on weekends (May 30-31), 16 deaths and at least 30 injured were recorded throughout the city as a result of firearm incidents. Writes about it Fox News.

One of the incidents involved shooting in a car, which killed two men. They were killed by headshots and declared dead at the scene.

In the five months of this year, 191 people died as a result of acts of violence in Chicago. Most deaths were the result of shooting.

This is the second weekend in a row when the city is faced with cruelty. The weekend on Memorial Day (May 23-25) this year was one of the deadliest in many years in the metropolis, when there were 10 dead and 39 wounded.

The cruelty situation was aggravated by protests related to the death of George Floyd.

State Governor JB Pritzker mobilized 375 Illinois National Guard soldiers to help block the streets. By evening, the Chicago Transit Authority suspended all bus and rail services "at the request of public safety officials." Metra, a suburban railway agency, suspended service in part due to "public and employee safety."

Chicago Mayor Laurie Lightfoot said in an interview that “it’s not easy to call the guard.”

“The National Guard has a certain optics, must have a certain level of equipment. We don’t want to waste this resource and make sure we only use it when it’s really needed,” she said.

Lightfoot asked residents to help police respond to dangerous incidents.

“People know who the shooters are. These cowards should not be given any shelter,” she said.
