The New York Times named a book about Ukraine one of the best publications of 2023

The book about the cultural heritage of Ukraine “Treasures of Ukraine: A Nation's Cultural Heritage” was included in ranking of the best publications of 2023, compiled by The New York Times, reports Ukrainian Truth.

The $30 illustrated edition was published in November by British publisher Thames & Hudson.

The preface to it was written by the Ukrainian writer Andrey Kurkov, and the culturologist Andriy Puchkov, the historian Maxim Yaremenko and art critics Diana Klochko and Miroslava Mudrak became co-authors.

The book has eight sections, presented in chronological order. She introduces the reader to Ukrainian art and heritage: from Scythian gold, Byzantine icons, to masterpieces of the avant-garde and works of art after the Orange Revolution.

“This timely new book introduces us to more than 100 buildings and works of art, from prehistoric and Baroque times to a modern bomb shelter, in a country we finally see as the heart of Europe. With sections on Orthodox icons and Catholic cathedrals, Soviet avant-garde art and national crafts, this book illustrates culture and its diversity. The very existence of this culture is now under threat - and indeed, some of the works shown in the book, such as stone statues near Kharkov, dating from the 9th to 13th centuries, have already been destroyed,” critic Jason Farago writes in the rating.

“The war in Ukraine is a war of cultures, so these are the stakes,” he also emphasizes.

The rating also notes that the publisher promised to transfer all the funds that would be received from the sale of a book about Ukrainian cultural heritage to the Ukrainian public organization PEN to support local museums. The book is available at Amazon.
