Netanyahu will call a new settlement in the Golan Heights in honor of Trump
On April 23, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that he would name a settlement on the Golan Heights in honor of US President Donald Trump.
Since Israel occupied the Golan Heights in 1967, Syria has continued to consider them as its territory. Therefore, the major world leaders did not recognize the sovereignty of Israel over this region, writes Fox News. But in March 2019, Trump broke the tradition and became the first US president to declare this land the territory of Israel.
“All Israelis were deeply moved when President Trump made the historic decision to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights,” Prime Minister Netanyahu said on Twitter on Tuesday, April 23.
“I intend to submit a resolution to the government calling for the creation of a new settlement in the Golan Heights, named after President Donald Trump,” the prime minister added.
In an official statement, Trump decided to recognize the Golan Heights as Israeli territory after "the aggressive actions of Iran and terrorist groups, including Hezbollah, in the south of Syria continue to make the Golan Heights a potential launching pad for attacks on Israel."
Syrian forces condemned Trump’s decision, stating that this "... makes the United States the main enemy of the Arabs."

President Trump’s recent efforts to protect Israel against foreign attacks, launched earlier this month, included the definition of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist group. At present, Iran represents the greatest military threat to Israel.
Netanyahu was reelected as Prime Minister for a fourth term a few days after Trump’s announcement of the Golan Heights was announced. He tweeted his thanks to the US president for his continued support in this position.
“Prime Minister Netanyahu thanked President Trump for his tremendous support for Israel, including recognition of Jerusalem and the Golan Heights, and for his strong stance against the Iranian regime, which includes the President's decision yesterday against Iran's Revolutionary Guard,” Netanyahu tweeted.

“This is how Jerusalem returns love to the President and the people of the United States who support the State of Israel,” Barket said at the official event.
