Several powerful tornadoes swept through 5 states: at least 70 people died

“We believe the death toll from the tornado will exceed 70 Kentuckians. There will probably be up to 100,” Beshear said, calling the storms that hit the state “the worst tornado in Kentucky history.”

Besheer said preliminary investigations show four tornadoes hit the state, including one that raged over 200 miles (321 km). Damage has been reported in at least 15 counties in western Kentucky.

The worst damage was in Graves County, he said, especially in the city of Mayfield.

When the tornado hit, there were about 110 people in the candle factory, and Beshir suggested: "We believe we will lose at least dozens of these people."

“This is a serious major disaster,” said Michael Dorsett, the state's emergency management director, who noted that search and rescue efforts were ongoing and had begun during the storm.

According to the Storm Prediction Center (NOAA), at least 24 tornadoes were reported in five states - Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri and Tennessee. Deaths were reported by officials in Arkansas and Illinois.

According to preliminary reports, one person died in Monette. In northeast Arkansas, after a tornado damaged a nursing home, dozens of people were trapped inside. At least 20 people were injured, the town's mayor Bob Blankenship said.

Another person died in nearby Lichville. The woman was at the Dollar Tree store when the storm hit and she was unable to get out, Mississippi County Sheriff Dale Cook said.

Arkansas Emergency Management Department spokesman Latreshi Woodruff said Highway 555 near Trumann was closed due to overturned vehicles. Damage was caused to the city's fire department, an ambulance station and a nursing home, Woodruff said.

An Amazon warehouse northeast of St. Louis was damaged, with confirmed deaths, according to the Edwardsville, Illinois Police Department.

“Every effort is being made to notify next of kin at this time,” the department said in a press release. It is not specified how many people died.

One of the local residents said that a family member and an employee were trapped inside the warehouse. The people in it remained calm and did everything to get out of the warehouse. The video from the scene shows a major emergency.

"It's terrible to see the amount of damage and to know that there were people inside when it happened," said Edwardsville Police Chief Michael Philback. He noted that police do not know how many people were in the building at the time of the collapse or how many may still be inside.

The train derailed near Madisonville, Kentucky early Saturday morning, December 11, due to weather changes, according to a CSX Transportation spokesman. There is no information about injuries.

Several structures were damaged in the Samburg community in northwest Tennessee, officials said. The city is "pretty badly destroyed," said Obion County Sheriff's dispatcher Judy Faulkner.

A tornado warning has appeared in the Nashville area, as a confirmed large and extremely dangerous tornado was located near Pegram.
