In the United States, the technique of lowering body temperature during surgery was first used. The technique allows you to cool the body of a critically ill patient to 10-15 ° C, which gives doctors an additional several hours to perform the operation. Writes about it RBC.

A group of doctors from the medical center at the University of Maryland was the first in the world to have an operation during which they successfully applied the technique of lowering human body temperature. This was announced by team leader Samuel Tisherman.

According to him, this technique is called Emergency Preservation and Resuscitation (EPR). This is a procedure in which a patient with an acute injury, such as a gunshot or knife wound, is cooled to 10 – 15 ° C. Cooling is carried out by introducing a cooled saline solution into the blood. This allows doctors to get a few hours to perform the operation without the risk of death of the patient.

As Tischerman explained, at normal human body temperature, his cells need a constant supply of oxygen to generate energy. “When our heart stops beating, blood no longer carries oxygen to the cells. Without oxygen, our brain can function for about five minutes. However, lowering the temperature of the body and brain slows down or stops all chemical reactions in the cells, which, as a result, need less oxygen, ”he explained.

The experimental operation was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which freed doctors from the patient’s consent to such a procedure, as his injury could potentially be fatal, and there was no alternative treatment.

The doctor said that studies conducted on animals with severe injuries showed the ability of animals to tolerate this procedure normally for three hours, and then return to normal. “We felt it was time to pass this on to our patients. As soon as we can prove that it works, we can expand the usefulness of this technique, ”he said.

Tisherman summarized that his team did not want to “send people to Saturn,” but was just trying to earn time during surgery to save lives.
