Illegal immigrants in California can report crimes without fear; they will not be deported

The law, sponsored by Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón and lobbyist by Assemblyman Miguel Santiago, is designed to encourage illegal immigrants who are victims of crime to report themselves to the police without fear of being turned over to immigration authorities.

Crimes covered by the new law include stalking, extortion, domestic violence, prostitution, rape, human trafficking and kidnapping.

“Your immigration status should never be a barrier to safety,” Gascón said. “Public safety for all and equal access to the justice system are possible if we protect those who are most vulnerable.”

“Californians should not lose their livelihoods just because they report a crime,” Assemblymember Santiago said. “With this legislation, we have a chance to not only reduce crime, but also protect some of the most vulnerable members of our community.”

The bill received widespread support from immigrant rights advocates, including Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis, the Koreatown Youth and Community Center, the Chinatown Service Center and the Thai Community Development Center.

The bill was approved by an overwhelming majority of votes in both houses of the Legislative Assembly without a single vote against.

According to Gascón, illegal immigrants who become victims of crime do not contact the police in 83% of cases.
