Illegals from Cuba sailed to Florida on a fishing boat: this is not the first time

It was the second landing of migrants this week in the Keys, and the second that people arrived in a wooden fishing boat rather than a makeshift boat or raft.

They arrived from Knights Key to the town of Middle Keys Marathon around 6:XNUMX am. Adam Hoffner, U.S. Customs and Border Protection's chief of operations in Miami, said there were six men and six women in the group. They told the agents that they had left Matanzas, Cuba. It was not immediately known how long they had been at sea.

“No injuries were reported at the scene,” Hoffner said in an email. “Migrants will be prepared for expulsion proceedings.”

On the evening of February 27, a similar boat arrived in Key West carrying 13 Cuban migrants - 11 adults and two children, border officials said.

Both landings are part of an ongoing influx of people escaping by boat from both Cuba and Haiti. This trend began over a year ago due to the deteriorating economic and political conditions in the island nations. The federal government tracks migration by fiscal year, which begins and ends on October 1st.

The Coast Guard said that after about six months of this fiscal year, it has already stopped more people at sea en route from Cuba to South Florida than in the entire fiscal year. 2021 - more than 842 people compared to 838.
