Live in one of these cities and get up to $20

Perpetual inflation, high interest rates and exorbitant health care costs leave Americans looking for ways to save money. The way out of the situation is through relocation programs and attracting new residents. You can choose a city that will pay you for moving there and provide nice bonuses for living there, reports CNN.

Worker relocation incentive programs are available across the country and have the same general idea: lure workers with financial incentives and other perks, such as free gym memberships, coworking spaces, and even dinner with the mayor.

There are many active programs to apply for. They offer generous bonuses and many additional privileges. Here are some of the programs worth looking into if you don't mind moving and getting paid for it.

Tulsa, Oklahoma

Tulsa remote started working in 2018 and became the first program of its kind. It offers remote workers and entrepreneurs $10 to move to a south-central US city for a year.

Since then, approximately 2900 people have been accepted into the program. As of December 2022, according to Tulsa Remote's latest economic impact report, its members earned nearly $307 million in direct employment income.

Applications are now open for the next phase of the relocation to Tulsa. The program aims to have 2027 participants by 4000.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, have lived outside of Oklahoma for at least a year prior to applying, and have moved to Tulsa within 12 months of approval.

West Virginia

Ascend West Virginia involving five communities, is a public-private initiative with an impressive history. It was founded by West Virginia native Brad D. Smith, former CEO of software company Intuit, and his wife Alice.

Now in its third year, the program provides members with $12 in cash rewards ($000 in the first year and $10 in the second) as well as outdoor benefits such as free passes for rock climbing, ziplining and golf. In addition, the program offers free access to coworking spaces. The complete relocation package is valued at over $000 and has received over 2000 applications to date.

Applicants can choose from a wide range of Ascend communities. In addition, organizers have submitted a funding request to the state legislature to expand the program so that even more communities can participate in the future.

Indiana

Indiana has been one of the most ambitious states when it comes to attracting new workers through relocation. Dozens of cities and regions have incentive packages, and as of 2023, about 340 families have moved to Indiana thanks to the platform, according to MakeMyMove.

You can get $15 to move to Noblesville, a suburb of Indianapolis. The program includes a season of free golf on two courses and coffee with the mayor. Meanwhile in Evansville qualified applicants can take advantage of a $7200 bonus. Plus, they can get museum tickets and an annual pass to visit the oldest urban forest in the United States.

Topeka, KS

Program Choose Topeka started in 2019. It offers applicants bonuses of up to $15 through employer funding. Since then, more than 000 people have applied and nearly 6000 lucky people have been selected to move to the state.

Unlike some incentive programs, Choose Topeka doesn't just focus on remote workers. People who recently left the military and "boomerangs" — former Topeka area residents who want to return to Shawnee County — are all eligible for the $5000 direct incentives. To do this, they must accept a job offer in Topeka with a minimum salary of $50 per year.

Recipients must remain in the state for at least a year. But program monitoring shows that an impressive 95% of them stay longer.

Kentucky

According to MakeMyMove, eight cities and towns in the state are currently hiring.

$8800 in relocation bonuses to Mayfield and Graves County includes $5000 in cash plus a variety of other perks (50% off after-school child care, lunch with the mayor, free monthly egg delivery, etc.).

Some cities offer a $2500 cash bonus (on top of $5000) for workers who bring a spouse. Provided that he or she will work at the local level in the field of health or education.

Shoals, Alabama

In an area known as the Shoals, which covers four major cities and two counties in the northwest Alabama region, the program Remote Shoals is offering qualified employees a bonus of up to $10.

This program launched in June 2019 and received a fourth round of funding in 2022 totaling $1 million in investment. As of February 2022, 2300 entries had been received from all 50 states, as well as several from abroad, with participants coming from 22 different states.

Eligible candidates must be self-employed or working full-time remotely outside of Colbert and Lauderdale counties, earn $52 or more annually, and move to the Shoals area within six months of selection.

Rochester, New York

Remote workers who aren't interested in getting a bite of the Big Apple can move to Rochester. Program Greater ROC Remote offers $10 in grants and incentives (plus another $000 for home purchases).

The program's goal is to attract approximately 600 participants (excluding family members) over three years. To be eligible, applicants must live more than 480 miles from downtown Rochester or in any state other than New York, have a fully remote position, and be over 18 years of age.

Applicants who complete the interview will be eligible to visit Rochester in person, with up to $500 in reimbursement (and $750 for couples).

Alaska

Alaska is the most sparsely populated state in the United States. But instead of offering cash incentives to potential out-of-state residents, Alaska provides those already in the state with an annual amount from its Permanent Fund Dividend.

The amount changes every year depending on what the government provides. But in 2022, each resident received $3284, the program's highest payout to date. However, in 2023 and 2024, this figure fell to $1312.

To be eligible for payments, you must have lived in Alaska for a full calendar year before filing your claim. Other eligibility criteria apply. Applications accepted from January 1 to March 31.

Michigan

About 350 scholarships and internships are available for participation in the program Michigander Scholars. It is designed to attract talent for the state's growing electric vehicle, mobility and semiconductor industries.

The year-old program awards scholarships ranging from $5000 to $10 to eligible recipients. Applicants complete an internship and/or accept a full-time position in the following industries: computing, electronics, software development, or process technology.

Of course, there are some conditions: the job or internship must be through a participating company, and recipients must commit to staying in Michigan for at least 12 months.

To date, the program has awarded 62 scholarships, with 521 students currently participating in the cohort. In the current initial phase, up to 350 scholarships will be awarded.
