Unknown gunmen shot and killed a couple, two small children and three dogs at the family's home in Chicago.

A couple, their two young children and three dogs were shot to death in their suburban Chicago home, reports NDTV.

Police discovered the victims' bodies around 20:40 pm on September 17 in Romeoville. The police went to their home to check their condition.

The adults, identified as Alberto Rolon, Zoraida Bartolomei and their two children, 10-year-old Adriel and 7-year-old Diego, and their three dogs are believed to have been shot and killed between the evening of September 16 and early September 17.

Romeoville Deputy Police Chief Chris Byrne said during a Sept. 18 press conference that they do not believe the death was the result of a murder-suicide. “We are now investigating this as a homicide,” he said.

“Due to the fact that more than 18 hours have passed since the family was found, we are not asking anyone to shelter in place and are not searching for anyone in the area,” he said.

“Our detectives and crime scene investigators have spent the last 36 hours collecting a tremendous amount of evidence,” he said. “We were able to determine that this was not a random incident, so there was no reason to declare self-isolation for the population.”

“It is important that we conduct a thorough investigation and commit all our resources to this task. The victims deserve it,” said Romeoville Mayor John Noack.

Police were called to check the home after a family member did not show up for work and did not answer family phone calls during the day.
