The unspoken rules: how to walk around New York with an umbrella

New York is beautiful in the rain, which cannot be said about the behavior of its inhabitants trying to hide from the rain under umbrellas. They casually open them in the crowded streets, hurting passersby, without hesitation shake off the water from them into the faces of people walking behind them and do many other things that turn New Yorkers with umbrellas into rude boors.

In connection with this edition Time-out collected a small list of etiquette rules for a man with an umbrella in New York.

Be careful on the stairs in the subway

If you go up the stairs from the subway, spend an extra five seconds to get off the top step to the side, where many people will not surround you before opening an umbrella. A few drops of water will not kill you, but the metal tip of an umbrella can significantly damage the face of a nearby person. If you are heading into the subway, carefully close the umbrella before entering the steps to descend.

Pay attention to the drops

During heavy rain, all lobbies and public transport in the city are always filled with umbrellas. Umbrellas are a pretty simple invention - whenever you're done using it, it takes less than 10 seconds to stop, shake and fold it. Shaking an umbrella and spraying droplets all over a subway car or store is an insult to other people there and makes them feel uncomfortable.

Avoid colliding umbrellas

Whenever two New Yorkers with umbrellas walk past each other on the street, neither of them wants to step aside a little or take other actions to cross each other safely and not encounter umbrellas. Remember that a taller person passing by another person with an umbrella should simply raise his umbrella. If two people are the same height, non-verbal communication can be used to determine who should lift an umbrella.

Discard massive umbrellas

The pavements of New York are not wide enough to use huge umbrellas. Naturally, an umbrella with a diameter of up to two meters can cover several people from the rain at once, but it will also disrupt the movement of pedestrians around, putting them in danger of being hit by an umbrella in the face. Use a small umbrella that is well suited for getting around the city.

Do not use an umbrella at all.

If it rains on the street, there is hardly any reason to use an umbrella. A raincoat and a hood will help to hide from a stronger rain.
