'Unethical and immoral': the hospital used patients for funding

Newark Beth Israel, a hospital that positions itself as the premier heart transplant center in New Jersey, has overestimated survival rates to maintain its funding.

The hospital staff never offered hospice, other palliative care services, and also did not use the patient’s testament “Do not reanimate”, which was in the history of his illness.

Meanwhile, doctors discussed how to take care of Young, despite the fact that they knew that the patient would never wake up and recover, according to a ProPublica report.

A total of four cases were discovered where doctors allegedly manipulated survival statistics.

Among other things, it was a patient with a lung transplant, whose name is not indicated. She was "kept alive" shortly before the deadline for providing survival data. But the case of the veteran of the Navy was the last of the recorded.

“It is necessary to maintain his life until June 30,” it was written about Young, indicating the date the next time the hospital needed to report patient survival data to federal Medicare and Medicaid officials.

The report said that the hospital experienced a drop in survival rates for heart transplants, which threatened to cancel federal funding.

“It is very, very unethical. This is an immoral, but unfortunately very practical solution, ”said Zucker in a statement.

According to ProPublica, the hospital supported Young on artificial life support and aggressively treated him for exactly a year, as he suffered from pneumonia, strokes, seizures and a dangerous fungal infection.

A month after the operation 20 on September 2018, hospital staff reluctantly admitted that Young had suffered brain damage. I had to confess only after the patient’s daughter asked why he still hadn’t regained consciousness.

The hospital also said that their transplant program "saves a large number of lives." All regulatory requirements to maintain funding and certification were constantly observed. This also applies to ensuring survival for one year after transplantation.
