'Did not call, did not apologize': the United States lifted sanctions on several Russian companies

The US Treasury Department has excluded from the sanctions list companies that got there as belonging to Russian hackers. Earlier, company owners called the imposition of sanctions against them a mistake by the American authorities, writes RBC.

The US Treasury Department has updated the list of companies with which American citizens and legal entities are prohibited from doing business (SDN, Specially Designated Nationals List), excluding from it three Russian companies - the Khanty-Mansiysk Vertical LLC and UNICOM LLC, as well as the Kurgan LLC "Auto Service Center".

Blacklisted all three companies have fallen December 5, when the United States imposed sanctions on a group of Russian hackers Evil Corp., which stole, according to the US Treasury Department, more than $ 100 million. The agency’s message then stated that Vertical, UNICOM, and the Auto Service Center belong to Denis Gusev, whom the US Treasury Department named one of the leaders of Evil Corp.

The owner of Vertical and UNICOM told RBC that his name was really Denis Gusev, however, he had no relation to hackers and got his company’s sanctions due to the US Department of the Treasury’s Foreign Assets Control Office (OFAC, Office of Foreign Assets Control) confused him with a complete namesake. According to the businessman, he and Denis Gusev, included in the sanctions list, even have a middle name, but their birth dates differ.

“Yes, I am the owner of Vertical and UNICOM. The Americans did not call me, did not apologize for having mixed up. The prosecutor’s office just called, wanted to carry out checks, I agreed. Our city is small, all of this is known, it can be seen. Of course, I did not feel the pressure of sanctions. I learned from you that they have imposed sanctions on me. If you hadn’t called, I wouldn’t even know that they were imposed, ”Gusev told RBC.

The owner of the "Auto Service Center" Alexander Lelekov, who compared OFAC's decision with the rally, also claimed non-participation in cyber technologies.

The decision to exclude Vertical, UNICOM, and the Auto Service Center from the SDN list in OFAC was not explained in any way.

5 December US authorities appointed for information that will help detain the alleged leader of the hacker group Evil Corp. (also known as Dridex gang) by Maxim Yakubets, $ 5 million. This is the largest reward ever awarded to a cybercriminal.

Over the past six years the US accepted many sanctions against Russia. In the spring of 2013 of the year - “Magnitsky’s law”, and five years ago, in March of 2014 — the first sanctions associated with the annexation of Crimea. A number of sanctions initiatives have appeared this year.
