'Don't lose hope': US nurse defeats COVID-19 after eight months of fighting
Nurse Merlin Pambuan leaves the hospital to the applause of her colleagues. After eight months of battling COVID-19, she was finally discharged from the medical facility where she has been working for 40 years. This is St. Mary's Medical Center in Long Beach, California. Voice of America.
Pambuan cannot hold back tears as he hugs the doctor and the medical staff who brought her back to life.
“I'm grateful. This is my second life,” she addresses her colleagues.
Merlin, 66, is an intensive care nurse who has been caring for COVID-19 patients since the start of the pandemic.
In the spring, the woman herself became a patient. She does not remember how she got to the department because she was in a state of an artificial coma.

She was placed under a ventilator, and later a feeding tube was inserted. Merlin was often in critical condition, says her physician, Mageda Thanios.
“She came very close to death about 6 times. We had a hard time keeping her oxygen levels compatible with life, and we had to do a lot of other treatments to keep her oxygenated,” the doctor said.
When Merlin woke up and could breathe on her own again, her body was so weak that she could barely keep her feet. Then there were many weeks of painful therapy and recovery. Now the nurse is finally at home.
“I thought I would never return to this house. But it's very nice to finally be home. I am grateful to God for everything,” says Merlin Pambuan.
Whether she will return to work in intensive care remains questionable. But Pambuan says she feels indebted to her colleagues for caring.
