A restaurant in New Mexico called the dishes popular Trump phrases: not everyone liked it

The new restaurant in New Mexico sparked controversy over menu items, as the dishes were named after the popular phrases of US President Donald Trump.

Urban Taqueria, located in Albuquerque, became the occasion for discussion after some customers complained about the menu's use of terms such as "The Wall", "Immigrant", "Fake News" and "Lock Her Up" (Lock Her Up).

Critics say these terms are offensive to certain groups and perpetuate hate speech.

"The way things are now, this is not good, — said customer Juan Hernandez. “We must respect others.”

University of New Mexico professor Patricia Perea said the use and "normalization" of such phrases — dangerously.

"It seems funny that you can make a joke about it and perhaps do it without a second thought, but in this way you really insult a whole group of people." — said Perea.

“It normalizes terms and potentially makes them funny, and the more you do it, the more likely it is that people will repeat them and possibly forget the contexts in which they were said,” she added.

Restaurant owner Hanif Mohamed, who is an immigrant, said the names on the menu — this is a joke.

“Ninety-nine percent of people who come to school seem to have no problem with this, — Mohamed said. “The menu is not intended to offend people or cause them harm, but simply to continue the conversation about what is happening around us.”

Not everyone, however, considers this choice of dish names on the menu offensive.

“It’s not offensive to me, — said visitor Christy Garcia. “On the contrary, I think it’s interesting that they decided to be so bold with the names.”
