“Our countries can forget about disagreements”: Trump and Putin issued a rare joint statement

US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin made a joint statement on the 75th anniversary of the historic meeting of American and Soviet troops at the end of World War II on the Elbe River in Germany, which marked the defeat of the Nazi regime. Meeting on the Elbe is an episode of World War II, when on April 25, 1945, near the city of Torgau on the Elbe River in Germany, troops of the 1st Ukrainian Front of the USSR met with troops of the 1st US Army. As a result of the meeting of the Allied troops, the remnants of the armed forces of the Nazi Reich were split into two parts - northern and southern.

The Spirit of the Elbe is an example of how our countries can put aside differences, build trust and cooperate for a worthy cause. Today we are working to solve the most important challenges of the 21st century, we pay tribute to the valor and courage of all who fought together for victory over fascism. Their heroic deed will never be forgotten,” the statement said.

According to The Wall Street Journal, joint statements are rare and the latter took place in 2010 from the then US President Barack Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

The publication notes that the decision on a joint statement by Trump and Putin became controversial, because the State Department and the US Department of Defense expressed skepticism about Russia's intentions and pointed to its actions in Ukraine, Syria, its interference in internal political processes in the United States.

The historic event was honored by the head of the US Department of Defense Mark Esper.

“Today marks the 75th anniversary of the meeting of the US and Soviet armies on the Elbe River, the event that ended Nazi aggression in Europe. We must remain eternally vigilant to protect human rights, freedom and the rule of law. #WW2,” the head of the Pentagon said on Twitter.

The Ukrainian Embassy in Germany honored the memory of millions of Ukrainian soldiers who heroically gave their lives for the liberation of Europe from Nazism. This is stated in the statement of the Ambassador of Ukraine to Germany Andriy Melnyk, which he made on the social network Twitter.

“Eternal Memory to Ukrainian Heroes,” Melnyk wrote.

Melnik also noted that in the famous historical photo related to the meeting on the Elbe, Ukrainian Alexander Silvashko and American William Robertson were immortalized.
