This story began almost 10 years ago., when Oksana Sivukha, together with her 8-year-old son, flew golden in the fall from Belarus to New York, winning an American green card.

“I had $200 and a small child with me. I came to New York with no friends or connections here. I had neither English nor computer skills,” Oksana recalls.

“But the experience of working in my homeland was quite valuable: I delivered babies and was a receptionist at the antenatal clinic.”

In parallel with work, she studied at Gomel State University. Francis Skaryna, and previously graduated from Gomel Medical College with a degree in Obstetrics.

“In Belarus, my level was quite comparable to that of a doctor. I always loved my job and wanted to continue doing it, but at the time of my arrival I had no prospects of becoming a midwife in America,” says Oksana. “Here I had to go to college for a few more years to get a degree that would qualify me to take the licensing exam.”

Despite all this, Oksana found a job on the third day of her stay in America - she got a job in a pharmacy. Little by little I began to get involved in my new life, making plans to realize myself in the country. “I saw myself only in the medical field,” says Oksana. – I once read in the newspaper that the Concord Rusam school is retraining as nurses those who already have a diploma as a doctor, paramedic, obstetrician or pediatric nurse. I liked that the organization was accredited by the Department of Education. I didn’t know then that many schools that train nurses add this clause to themselves, but not all of them are actually accredited. “Sometimes I literally had to starve. A child could bring some... well, a cracker from school, literally. And then I had something to eat in the evening,” Oksana recalls. “We lived close to each other, constantly saving, a huge part of our salary was spent on renting an apartment.”

Fortunately, in February 2012, a job was found!” says Oksana.

She got a job as a nurse in a Russian medical office. After that, I changed several more jobs in my specialty. And now she is quite happy with what she is doing, and is glad that everything turned out this way: “I like to develop and move forward.
