The US space agency NASA announced its intention to allow paid private flights to the International Space Station. According to NASA’s chief financial officer, Jeff DeWitt, commercial launches are scheduled to begin with 2020.

The NASA initiative is a response to the plans of the Donald Trump administration announced last year to complete state funding for the International Space Station by 2024 and gradually find commercial alternatives to it. Representatives of NASA state that their ultimate goal is to create a system of orbital settlements.

DeWitt said that the delivery will be carried out twice a year.

“We are now paying Russia more than $80 million for a seat on board the Soyuz spacecraft. We expect that the flight on the CST-100 Boeing and SpaceX Dragon spacecraft will cost us in the region of $58 million,” he said.

At the same time, NASA will allow visiting the ISS only to tourists who fall under the control criteria. For example, they should have a connection with the mission of the space research agency.
