Buyers' observations: which products in the USA have risen in price the most

Nowadays, going to the grocery store has become a test for both the nerves and the wallet due to restrictions on purchases, delays in delivery and a shortage of your favorite goods. Retailers like Costco are doing their best to keep items in stock while new challenges arise in the market.

Taste of Home recently asked Facebook users if they were experiencing food shortages in local supermarkets, and thousands of shoppers responded in the comment section.

Whether their store shelves were empty or full, many commentators also noted one thing in common: rising grocery bills. Specifically, they notice that four staple foods are skyrocketing in price right now, and that increase can make it harder to prepare breakfast for your family.

Bacon

Bacon has become more expensive to bring home in recent months due to the continuing impact of supply chain disruptions amid increased demand.

Experts told Business Insider ahead of summer that “the aftermath of last year’s disruption” continued high prices for both bacon and hot dogs. And so, according to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), pork had "the largest relative price increase" from 2020 to 2021 (5,4%).

Shoppers commented on a Facebook post from Taste of Home that they are paying twice as much for bacon right now. In fact, one person claimed that he recently bought a kilo of Applewood bacon at an "absolutely insanely high" price of $ 27.

Milk

Grocery shoppers in some of the largest cities in the United States have consistently paid more for a gallon of milk since the beginning of the year.

Recent USDA data show prices have risen to an average of $ 3,71 a gallon for whole milk and $ 3,67 a gallon 2% in August and a few cents in September. Nearly $ 5 per gallon of milk is paid by residents of Kansas City, Missouri, Philadelphia and Washington.

Eggs

The cost of a dozen eggs has skyrocketed since the start of the pandemic.

A pack of 12 large eggs averaged $ 1,35 in September, the highest monthly figure in several years, according to the USDA.

Some Facebook shoppers said they paid up to $ 5, but the most recent data shows advertised consumer prices are going down in the first week of October compared to last year, so we'll see how the trends change over the month.

Meanwhile, there were problems with the birds themselves, and not just with their eggs. Tyson, the second largest chicken processor, attributed the chicken shortage problem in fast food chains such as Bojangles and KFC to high demand and not enough roosters.

Beef

Beef is another type of meat whose prices have risen sharply over the past year and a half, with consumers noticing that it is now more expensive than ever. “Beef prices are insane,” one person commented on Taste of Home’s Facebook post.

And the official data confirms the situation. According to the USDA, the retail price of beef in August 2021 was $ 7,63 per pound, up from $ 6,49 a year earlier. When was the lowest price in the last two years? October 2019, when a pound of beef was only $ 5,89.
