350 earthquakes hit Southern California in one day
On May 9-10, a series of earthquakes, called a "seismic swarm," occurred in the Brawley area of Imperial County in southern California. By May 10, ABC NewsMore than 350–355 tremors were recorded. By May 11, activity gradually began to subside.
The first impulses were recorded on the evening of May 9 at around 17:40 PM. More noticeable activity began early in the morning with preliminary tremors lasting for about three hours. The peak occurred overnight between May 9 and 10. The strongest earthquake, a magnitude 4,7, occurred at approximately 00:10 AM on May 10. Its epicenter was located several kilometers west or southwest of Brawley at a depth of approximately 9–14 kilometers.
Most of the tremors were weak, ranging in magnitude from 1,5 to 2,5, although dozens exceeded magnitude 3,0, and several exceeded magnitude 4,0. All epicenters were located in the Brolin Seismic Zone between the Salton Sea and the Mexican border. This is a fault region connecting the San Andreas system and the Imperial Fault, where such swarms occur regularly.

Residents of Brawley and neighboring towns, including El Centro and Calexico, felt repeated tremors. Some were quite strong. A magnitude 4,7 earthquake was felt as far away as San Diego as weak vibrations. Many described continuous shaking and said the tremors came one after another. There were no serious damage or injuries. Only minor problems, such as water leaks and utility problems, were reported.
Local authorities and the Governor's Office of Emergency Management monitored the situation.
"There is currently no immediate threat to public safety. No significant damage to city infrastructure has been detected," the city's top officials said in a statement.
Such seismic swarms are typical for this zone. Unlike typical earthquakes with a single main pulse and aftershocks, here multiple events of similar magnitude occur on small faults.
Earthquake expert Dr. Lucy Jones noted that such activity is typical for this seismic zone. The city of Brawley issued a statement on May 10th announcing that it continues to monitor seismic activity in the region.

One of the city's residents, who called ABC News on May 9, said she felt another tremor during a phone call: "I was scared when I suddenly felt a strong jolt. Everything started moving. The shaking continued. Even now, as we speak, I feel something humming beneath me," said Kathleen Singh.
