US nuclear base in Europe raised alarm over Russian missile launch

The US Ramstein Air Base in Germany issued a threat warning a few days ago. The reason for this was a training launch of a Russian rocket.

The airbase alarm went off the official Ramstein Facebook group on 12 December. It indicated that it was not about exercises.

“Today, the command post of the Ramstein airbase received a notification through the missile launch warning system in Europe. The command, in strict accordance with the procedure, notified the military in the city of Kaiserslautern. Later, the launch of the missiles was recognized as part of the exercise, and not as a real threat, ”the message said. At the same time, the statement does not specify which country launched the missiles.

After receiving a warning of the threat of an attack at the airbase, which is the main base of the US Air Force in Europe and one of the two nuclear arsenals of NATO forces on the continent, "several minutes of uncertainty and alarm" began. This was due to the fact that the alarm went off after the report of a possible missile attack from US military satellites.

The satellites transmitted information that several ICBMs had been launched from a Russian submarine in the Sea of ​​Okhotsk. The US military was able to quickly assess the situation and understand that there will be no large-scale conflict and therefore it is not clear why the alarm did not go off.

“Not a single American military has been misled. The rocket launch was identified as part of the exercise, and a few minutes later, the control center provided an update in accordance with the procedure. We constantly and regularly monitor any threats to our forces and the forces of our allies, ”the US Air Force Command said in a statement.

Later it became known that on December 12, when the alarm sounded at the base, large-scale exercises of strategic forces were being conducted in Russia. The launch of ballistic missiles, described by CNN's interlocutors, was carried out from the Vladimir Monomakh submarine. The submarine struck with four Bulava missiles at a training ground in the Arkhangelsk region.

This was the first salvo launch of four Bulava missiles at once from a submarine.

In January 2018, the residents of the Hawaiian Islands received a message about a missile attack by mistake. Their telephones received notifications urging them to immediately seek refuge. The erroneous sending of such messages caused a scandal, since the incident occurred against the backdrop of a military escalation between the DPRK and the United States.
