In the US elections this year, it will be possible to vote in Ukrainian for the first time. This opportunity was given to voters in Cook County, Illinois, which includes the city of Chicago and its suburbs. The decision was made in the district administration. Writes about it "Voice of America".

The Ukrainian language will be available during all stages, at all levels of elections: both presidential and local, and in Congress.

“The Ukrainian language will be on ballots and on electronic boards at voting stations. Moreover, there will also be an opportunity to listen to the audio for people who cannot read the board, said Mila Lugovaya, an advocate for the Ukrainian language in Cook County. — There will also be signs indicating the entrance, exit, where to go at polling stations. That is, the entire election process will be translated into Ukrainian. And this is truly a historic decision and a great achievement for the entire Ukrainian society.”

In addition to Ukrainian, the electoral process will also be made available in 12 different languages, including Polish and Russian. According to Mila Lugovoi, American politicians are also interested in such expansion, because it gives them access to those people who do not speak fluent English and do not understand the electoral process.

“If absolutely the entire process is translated into Ukrainian - say, candidate programs, if you explain who is elected, what functions this person will perform, what functions this position provides, then people will choose more thoughtfully and consciously. Therefore, they will be more interested in the elections - because when you understand that they have taken a step forward for you and switched to your native language, this arouses both gratitude and interest in this process,” said Mila Lugovaya.

The translation will be carried out by certified firms, after which Ukrainian activists will check it again for compliance.

“Every word is very important, and some words have double meanings. And if a person, having voted, then says that he misunderstood this word, accordingly, the ballot and the vote of this person can be declared invalid,” says Mila Lugovaya.

Cook County in Illinois is the first in the United States to add Ukrainian to its election process. More than 46 Ukrainians live in Chicago.
