High hurricane season is coming to the USA

Storm activity in the Atlantic in 2017 will be higher than the long-term averages, according to the final forecast of the University of Colorado (CSU) for the current season ending on November 30.

According to the University of Colorado, the likelihood that at least one of the hurricanes reaches the coast is estimated at 62% with a long-term average of 52%.

According to scientists, it is assumed that at least 16 hurricanes (versus 15 expected in July, and 11 in April) will have their own name this season (that is, they may have a significant impact on weather conditions, agriculture and energy markets), of which 8 can be recognized as hurricanes.

In three cases, a wind speed of at least 111 miles per hour (179 km / h or almost 50 m / s) is expected, which corresponds to the 3 category and higher on the Saffir-Simpson scale - all such 5 categories.

The season officially lasts from June 1 to November 30, although it may go beyond this, the most devastating hurricanes are usually observed from August 20 to the beginning of October.

The most vulnerable state is Florida. In addition, this year there is an increased threat to oil and gas installations on the shelf of the Gulf of Mexico.

Recall, the University of Colorado in 2016 year predicted 15 hurricanes for the season, and his expectations were met. In 2015, the forecast assumed all 8 hurricanes, but they turned out to be 11.
