An increase in the level of radiation has been recorded in northern Europe: a leak from a Russian nuclear power plant is suspected

In some parts of Sweden, Finland, Norway and Russia, an elevated level of radiation is recorded. On Sunday, June 28, AFP reported with reference to the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), writes DW.

According to the organization, the radioactive spot covers the southern third of Sweden, the southern half of Finland, Estonia, Latvia, as well as the north-west of Russia, in particular St. Petersburg. CTBTO noted that this level of radiation is not dangerous to humans.

CTBTO Executive Secretary Lassino Zebro noted that it is highly likely that recorded radiation emissions are of civilian origin.

According to the National Institute of Health and the Environment of the Netherlands, the source of radiation emissions is located in western Russia. However, they cannot determine the location more accurately. They also clarified that the type of radionuclides suggests that this could be “damage to a fuel cell at a nuclear power plant.”

In turn, the Russian concern Rosenergoatom denied the likelihood of emergencies at Russian nuclear power plants.

In the above region, in addition to Russia, there are also operating nuclear power plants in Finland and Sweden.
