Murder spree at popular resort in Cancun

The resort of Cancun in Mexico is known for its spectacular white sand beaches and turquoise waters.

However, the bright natural paradise is losing popularity among tourists because of the wave of brutal killings in the region, writes The New York Post.

In 2017, the homicide rate doubled compared to 2016 in the year, and reached 169 in the first half of 2017.

Drug trafficking and extortion have flourished in the region for a long time, most of the killings remain unsolved, so the popular resort is gradually losing tourists.

British journalist Krishnan Guru-Murthy went to Mexico to film a special murder report for the Australian state television company Special Broadcasting Service. The reporter was stunned by what he saw.

“This is one of the most beautiful views in the world, and we are the only people here,” Guru-Murthy said from Cancun’s empty main beach.

That same evening, he witnessed the murder, four men entered a luxury hotel and attacked a man who later died in the hospital. This is despite the fact that the hotel was located in one of the safest parts of the city.

Guru Murthy was also shocked by the lack of reaction from the police, and many tourists simply did not believe that this was actually happening.

The journalist noted that at the crime scene there was a minimum of officers, they did everything very calmly and quickly, “as if they didn’t want someone to notice that a crime had occurred”.

Later, Guru-Murthy found out that the local press and authorities were asked not to report the killings, because if the tourists stop coming to Cancun, it “will be an economic disaster not only for Cancun, but also for Mexico.”

Even after the murder of a local policeman and his family, no one was arrested.

Due to the growing number of killings in Cancún, there are fears that this resort will completely lose tourists, repeating the fate of Acapulco, which was once one of the most glamorous places in the world, but is now the capital of the killings in Mexico.

Guru Murthi also visited Acapulco, and just five minutes after landing, he was notified of the nearest crime scene with four corpses, including children.

In addition, during his stay in the city at night, he heard shots - a taxi driver was killed on the street.

Investigators in Acapulco are overworked, often on 10 killing scenes for the day.

The military patrols the streets and beaches of the city, extortion and murder occur incredibly often. Many businesses are forced to close. There are no foreign tourists in the city at all - it’s too dangerous.

Local entrepreneur Lara, who closed her business, explained: “They came one day and asked me to pay them 15 to 000 pesos ($20 to $000) a month. And this is about 800 or 1000 percent of our turnover.”

Extortion occurs not only in the city. In nearby coastal villages where police rarely go, crime also flourishes.

René Ozuna, a fisherman from the suburb of Acapulco, inspired local residents to rise up against extortionist gangs, forming groups that were called the Public Police.

“We killed about six or seven people. But only criminals, extortionists. Criminals who cut people into pieces. In civilian life I am a good person,” he said.
