An atmospheric storm hits California: roads are flooded, a million people are left without electricity
On February 4, an intense and long-lasting atmospheric river began moving into California. And on February 5, a winter storm hit the state, causing widespread flooding and depriving nearly a million people of power supply, reports Yahoo.

An atmospheric river is a layer of moisture in the atmosphere that carries moist air from the tropics, dumping heavy snow and rain on another region.
The Los Angeles office of the National Weather Service (NWS) warned that "all systems are ready for one of the most dramatic days of weather in recent memory."
According to the weather service, the worst storm will occur between February 4 and February 6.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura counties.
“This is a serious storm with dangerous and potentially life-threatening consequences. Please pay attention to any emergency messages or warnings from local authorities,” he said. “California is ready and we have a record number of emergency resources on the ground to respond to the impacts of this storm.”
What is known at the moment
By the evening of February 4, about 900 people across the state were without power, according to poweroutage.us.
Officials issued a hurricane-force wind warning along the coast as it downed trees, downed power lines and left areas flooded by heavy rain along the way.
The NWS warned that wind gusts could reach 148 km/h from the Monterey Peninsula to northern San Luis Obispo County.
Flash flood warnings have been issued for parts of Los Angeles, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties, with forecasters expecting "nearly continuous rain" for 48 hours.
“This could become a historic storm with strong winds, thunderstorms and even brief tornadoes,” Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said at a news conference.
People had to be rescued from a car stuck in floodwaters in San Jose and from a homeless encampment on the banks of a rising river.
In the San Francisco Bay area, wind speeds reached 96 km/h in some areas, with gusts exceeding 128 km/h in the mountains.
The winds caused hours-long delays at San Francisco International Airport, where hundreds of flights were delayed or canceled on Feb. 4, according to tracking website FlightAware.
Schools in Santa Barbara County were closed on February 5th.
Further down the coast, high winds and heavy rain created dangerous conditions for the city of Ventura.
“All the highways here are flooded. I don’t know how I’m going to move my car,” said Alexis Herrera, whose car was covered in floodwater.
Heavy rains canceled the final round of a professional golf tournament at Pebble Beach in Monterey County in northern California. And with more rain forecast for Monday, the PGA Tour ended the event after just three days, naming Wyndham Clark the winner.
Evacuation warnings due to possible landslides were in effect in the mountainous and canyon areas of Monterey, Santa Barbara, Ventura and Los Angeles counties, which have previously been damaged by wildfires.
“If you have not already left, please gather your family, pets, medications and leave immediately,” said Los Angeles County Executive Lindsey Horvath.
Heavy snow is expected across the Sierra Nevada on February 5 and motorists are advised to avoid mountain roads.
