Hawaii has become dangerous to rest due to a deadly infection
Currently, three cases of a deadly parasitic infection - a rat pulmonary worm - have been confirmed. Travelers infected them while on holiday in Hawaii.
The disease, which is officially known as angiostrongiliasis, or “rat pulmonary worm”, is caused by a parasitic infection. The parasite, as we know, develops in rats, hence the name, but its life cycle also allows you to contact people.

The rat pulmonary worm is a parasitic nematode that begins its life in the lungs, blood and brain of a rat. When the rats defecate, the larvae of the worm get to other animals - snails, slugs and freshwater shrimp. People can eat infected animals or foods made from it.
In humans, the parasite affects the nervous system. The worm enters the brain, which can cause meningitis. Infection with this infection often leads to death. The severity of the disease may vary, there is no treatment for the infection, and it is very difficult to diagnose it.
At the end of last year, a man died after he ate a slug on a bet. As a result, the man was paralyzed. In this state, he lived for eight full years.
It appears that one of the three infections confirmed by health officials in Hawaii occurred in a similar way.
“One of the victims visited East Hawaii in December 2018 and became infected by intentionally eating a slug,” the state Department of Health explained in a statement. “The man fell ill at the end of December, but was not hospitalized due to his symptoms.”

Eating infected animals is not the only way to become infected. Slugs, which are considered the main carriers of this parasite, can infect vegetables and fruits. If they are not washed before use, the parasite can settle in a person.
Government officials urge visitors and residents to remember the basic rules of hygiene, including washing products before use, as well as washing hands.
Rat pulmonary infection has been reported in 30 countries. Officials are excited that the infection appears in areas where it was previously impossible due to climatic conditions, for example, in Oklahoma. Scientists fear that this is another consequence of climate change.
